Are Bioethanol Fireplaces Safe? UK Safety & Regulations Guide
Yes — a bioethanol fireplace is safe when used correctly. It is a real flame, so it deserves respect, but with a little common sense and a well-made, certified unit there is nothing to worry about. Here is what UK owners need to know.
Do they need a chimney or planning permission?
No. This is the main reason people choose bioethanol. Unlike gas fires and wood burners, a bioethanol fire is flueless — it needs no chimney, no flue, no gas supply and no building-regulations approval. It burns a clean liquid fuel and releases only carbon dioxide and water vapour, so there is no smoke to extract.
What standard should a safe fireplace meet?
Look for units certified to the European safety standard for bioethanol fireplaces, EN 16647, with CE marking. A certified unit has been tested for stable, leak-free construction, correct burner design and spill protection. All of our fireplaces are CE-certified, powder-coated steel construction with safe, leak-free burners.
Ventilation and room size
Because combustion produces CO₂, the fire should be used in a well-ventilated room. Many manufacturers recommend a minimum room size of around 20 m², and it is sensible to avoid very small, sealed spaces. A normal living room with a trickle vent or an occasionally opened window is ideal. Open-plan spaces are perfect.
Safe use — the golden rules
- Only use genuine bioethanol fuel (95–96.6% purity). Never use petrol, white spirit or any other flammable liquid.
- Never refuel while the burner is lit or still hot. Wait for it to cool fully before topping up.
- Keep a safe distance from curtains, sofas and other flammable materials.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets while alight.
- Use the included snuffer/extinguisher to put the flame out — never blow it out.
- Follow the supplied manual for lighting, refuelling and maintenance.
Indoors vs outdoors
Bioethanol fireplaces are designed for indoor use in living rooms, kitchens and open-plan spaces, and many models are also ideal for covered terraces and gardens. Always check the model's rating — indoor-rated units should not be left exposed to rain.
The bottom line
Handled properly, a bioethanol fireplace is a safe, clean and low-commitment way to enjoy a real fire with no chimney. Choose a CE-certified unit, use proper fuel, give it some ventilation, and you can relax and enjoy it for years.
